TRICARE covers one manual or standard electric breast pump per birth event for all TRICARE-eligible female beneficiaries at 27+ weeks of pregnancy — regardless of plan type or sponsor status. Coverage is the same whether you have TRICARE Prime, Select, Reserve Select, Young Adult, For Life, or use the Overseas Program. A prescription from a TRICARE-authorized provider (physician, PA, nurse practitioner, or nurse midwife) is required. If you want a luxury or premium model with extras like Bluetooth, app connectivity, or enhanced batteries, you can choose one and pay the difference between TRICARE's maximum reimbursement for a standard pump and the retail price.

Breast Pump Replacement Parts
TRICARE is significantly more generous than most commercial plans on replacement parts. Per the official TRICARE supplies schedule: 12 valves/membranes every 12 months, 2 locking rings, 2 replacement bottles, and 2 bottle caps per 12 months; tubing, tubing adapters, and breast shields per birth event; one power adapter replacement per birth event. Coverage extends up to 36 months post-birth, so resupply is available well into your second year of breastfeeding. The main exclusion is breast pump batteries (unless integrated into the original pump kit).
TRICARE covers 100 breast milk storage bags every 30 days following the birth event — roughly 1,200 bags per year per beneficiary, among the most generous storage-bag benefits in any U.S. health plan. Coverage runs for the full 36-month post-birth window, so working moms building a stash before deployment, OCONUS moves, or return-to-duty have ample supply.

Lactation Consultations
TRICARE covers up to six individual outpatient breastfeeding counseling sessions per birth event at no cost-share, copay, or deductible. Sessions can be delivered by TRICARE-authorized doctors, PAs, nurse practitioners, nurse midwives, and registered nurses. Under the Childbirth and Breastfeeding Support Demonstration (CBSD) — running through December 31, 2026 — eligible sessions also include independent Certified Lactation Consultants (CLCs) and International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs). Telehealth is allowed. CBSD is available under TRICARE Prime, Prime Remote, and Select — but not TRICARE For Life, US Family Health Plan, or CHCBP.
