There are so many breast pumps available to moms, and it can be hard to pick the best one for you. And while most moms end up choosing an electric breast pump, every mom can benefit from including the Haakaa Breast Pump in their list of must have gear!
Whether you exclusively nurse your baby, exclusively pump, or find yourself somewhere in between, the Haakaa silicone breast pump can come in handy.
What is a Haakaa Breast Pump?
The Haakaa is a silicone pump that suctions to your breast. Use it on one breast while your baby nurses or you pump the other. The Haakaa is completely hands-free, and the process of being suctioned to your breast actually draws milk out. Since it’s not an electric pump, it’s really and truly silent.
When to Use a Haakaa Pump
Use your Haakaa breast pump whenever and wherever you need to. Because there are no power cords, or tubes - just the silicone bottle with flange - it easily fits in your bag.
Moms that are new to breastfeeding find that the Haakaa is great while nursing. Instead of wasting leaking milk from the breast your baby is not feeding on, attach the Haakaa and collect up to 1-4 ounces! No more wasted liquid gold!
How to Use a Haakaa Breast Pump
It’s so easy, you likely don’t need us to tell you how it’s done! But, since you probably didn’t get much sleep last night thanks to baby, we’re here to help.
First, start by squeezing the pump gently to get the air out. Place the pump’s flange (the big ol’ bowl part) over your breast - just make sure your nipple is in the center. Once it’s in the right position, release the squeeze. The Haakaa breast pump should now be suctioned to your breast and your milk will release into the bottle.
Alternatively, you can fold back the flexible flange (shaped like a bowl) and squeeze the bottom of the pump. Put your nipple into the neck of the pump, then release the rim of the flange/bowl while simultaneously releasing your squeeze on the bottom of the pump, suctioning the flange to your breast.
Can the Haakaa Pump Help with Clogged Ducts?
Yes!!! Many moms have found relief from clogged ducts by using their Haakaa pump. When a clogged duct rears its ugly head (you’ll recognize a hard lump, redness, or inflammation), fill up the Haakaa with warm water. You want it comfortably warm, not piping hot, and you will fill up the bottle with enough water to reach your nipple.
The washable components of your breast pump can be cleaned in soapy warm water, on the top shelf of your dishwasher, or by using a sterilizing method that’s suitable for bottles.
Add 1-2 Tbsp. of Epsom salts to the bottle. Suction the Haakaa to the blocked breast and allow the heat, salts and suction relieve the clog. Leave the pump attached for 10 minutes or so, and repeat a few times, if needed.
